Hawker Hurricane Mk.I en Rumanía
Iconic worldwide famous fighter airplane and one of the symbols of the Battle of Britain alongside the Spitfire, the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was actually responsible for the majority of Luftwaffe losses in the summer of 1940, making the British island invasion (Operation Seelöwe) ultimately impossible.
Surprisingly enough it is less well known its participation in «Barbarossa» either with the Soviets and with the Romanian and Finnish air forces.
It isn’t a very fast machine (512 km/h), but it is certainly well armed with 8 Browning 7.7 mm. machine guns in the wings and it is very maneuverable.

Acquisition and deployment
Romania ordered 50 Hawker Hurricane Mk.I in 1939 to Great Britain which will arrive just before Romania makes its political alignment to the Axis powers; only 12 were delivered before the start of the war (the rest never arrived due to the wartime blockade). After this the spare parts acquisition will become a serious problem. They were assigned to the Escadrila 53 Vânătoare “Mamaia”, part of Grupul 7 Vânătoare, based at the Mamaia airfield (Constanța, on the Black Sea coast). In the 53rd Fighter Squadron, they were assigned, among other tasks, the mission of patrolling the port of Constanța.
The Soviets launched a retaliation airstrike on this target on the 23rd of June’ 41. At sunrise 33 DB-3F’s and 27 SB’s (2 MTAP and 40 BAP of the Black Sea Fleet). This time the same harbour facilities are the objectives, but the bombs are released at very high altitude with minimal accuracy. The Hurricanes scramble…
Operations in 1941 — Eastern Front
22 June 1941 — Romania enters the war alongside Germany. Escadrila 53 is the only fighter squadron with Hawker Hurricane Mk.I aircraft in Dobruja at that time. There, on 23 June 1941, the Soviets plan a reprisal attack and, at dawn, 33 DB-3F plus 27 SB-2 (2 MTAP and 40 BAP of the Black Sea Fleet, respectively) carry out a raid. This time the port is the target, but the attack is made from high altitude and is not very accurate. The Romanian Hurricanes scramble to intercept…
On the very same day of Barbarossa, the downing of four Polikarpov I-16 “Ishak” fighters was credited. Until the end of the year, the 53rd Fighter Squadron would be one of the most successful squadrons in the Romanian inventory.
23 June 1941 — Lieutenant Horia Agarici (who in 1941 commanded Escadrila 53) single-handedly intercepted a formation of 7 Soviet bombers over the skies of Constanța at the controls of his Hawker Hurricane Mk.I. His aircraft was severely damaged in combat, but he managed to shoot down 2 confirmed + 1 probable. This earned him the nickname “Salvadorul Constanței” (The Savior of Constanța).
26 June 1941: The Soviet destroyers Moskva and Kharkov bombarded the defenses and facilities of Constanța. Hurricanes of Squadron 53 took an active part again in the air defense, operating in cover over the Dobrujan coast together with Romanian and German anti-aircraft artillery during this naval action.
Bessarabia and Odessa Campaign (summer–autumn 1941): The unit took part in escort and air superiority missions during the Bessarabia campaign and the advance towards Odessa. The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I aircraft operated alongside Bf 109E and He 112 within the framework of the Grupul 7 Vânătoare.
Limitations of the aircraft in Romanian service
The only 12 Hawker Hurricane Mk.I delivered were Mk.I with Merlin III engine — a version already outdated by 1941. Against modern Soviet fighters (LaGG-3, MiG-1) they were inferior in speed, although Romanian pilots compensated with tactical aggressiveness. The type was progressively withdrawn from 1942 onwards.
The very same day of Barbarossa start they claimed 4 Polikarpov I-16 “Ishak’s” shot down. Promising commencement that will make the 53rd one of the most successful squadrons by the end of the year…
Notable Pilots

Horia Agarici — Pilot of Grup 8 Vănaţoare and the most thoroughly documented Romanian Hurricane ace. In the opening days of Operation Barbarossa (June 1941) he scored aerial victories over Bessarabia at the controls of his Hawker Hurricane Mk.I, earning the nickname «vănătorul de bolșevici» — the Bolshevik hunter. His Hurricane combat record set the stage for a distinguished career as a fighter pilot.
Constantin «Bâzu» Cantacuzino — Of noble origin, belonging to one of the oldest aristocratic families in Romania with roots in Byzantine nobility, he flew the Hurricane in 1941 on the Eastern Front in his first documented engagements.
